Base Set>Grass
Caterpie
40 HP
Basic Pokemon
Attack 1: String Shot 10
Attack 1 Energy Cost: 1 Grass
Attack 1 Special: Flip a coin. If heads, the Defending Pokemon is now Paralyzed.
Weakness: Fire
Retreat Cost: 1
Recommendation: Caterpie is a strong starter and staller. String Shot does damage the first turn, while possibly Paralyzing the Defending Pokemon, making it unable to attack until next turn. This give you the chance to power up your Bench.

Caterpie
50 HP
Basic Pokemon
Attack 1: Spin Tackle 20
Attack 1 Energy Cost: 1 Colorless
Attack 1 Special: Caterpie does 10 damage to itself.
Weakness: Fire
Retreat Cost: 1
Recommendation: This is an OK card, but be careful how much you use it. Make sure to have a Healing Item ready to take damage off while still attacking. The evolutions are nice, so have them in the deck. Don't put these in as extras though.
Metapod BS
Base Set>Grass
Metapod
70 HP
Stage 1 Pokemon
Attack 1: Stiffen
Attack 1 Energy Cost: 2 Colorless
Attack 1 Special: Flip a coin. If heads, prevent all damage done to Metapod during your opponent's next turn. (Any other effects of attacks still happen.)
Attack 2: Stun Spore 20
Attack 2 Energy Cost: 2 Grass
Attack 2 Special: Flip a coin. If heads, the Defending Pokemon is now Paralyzed.
Weakness: Fire
Retreat Cost: 2
Recommendation: Evolve Caterpie and attach an Energy to let Stun Spore loose. Just like String Shot, Stun Spore would stall and do damage while powering up the Bench. Stiffen will also work if Metapod gets into trouble.
Metapod ND
Neo Discovery>Grass
Metapod
70 HP
Stage 1 Pokemon
Attack 1: Harden
Attack 1 Energy Cost: 2 Colorless
Attack 1 Special: During your opponent's next turn, whenever 20 or less damage is done to Metapod (after applying Weakness and Resistance), prevent that damage. (Any other effects of attacks still happen.)
Attack 2: Hatch
Attack 2 Energy Cost: 2 Grass
Attack 2 Special: Flip a coin. If heads, remove all damage counters form Metapod. Then, search your deck for a card that evolves from Metapod and attach that card to Metapod. This counts as evolving Metapod. Shuffle your deck afterward.
Weakness: Fire
Retreat Cost: 2
Recommendation: Evolving from Caterpie, you have no choice but to use Harden, which only works against Basic Pokemon. Then use Hatch until you have evolved, and do actual damage with the Discovery Butterfree.
Butterfree Jungle
Jungle>Grass
Butterfree
70 HP
Stage 2 Pokemon
Attack 1: Whirlwind 20
Attack 1 Energy Cost: 2 Colorless
Attack 1 Special: If your opponent has any Benched Pokemon, he or she chooses 1 of them and switches it with the Defending Pokemon. (Do the damage before switching the Pokemon.)
Attack 2: Mega Drain 40
Attack 2 Energy Cost: 4 Grass
Attack 2 Special: Remove a number of damage counters from Butterfree equal to half the damage done to the Defending Pokemon (after applying Weakness and Reistance) (rounded up to the nearest 10).
Weakness: Fire
Resistance: Fighting
Retreat Cost: 0
Recommendation: This has an awfully low HP for a Stage 2, and 4 Energies for Mega Drain is a bit much. At least Whirlwind is fully powered from its past evolution. Not only that, but it is a switching attack.
Butterfree ND
Neo Discovery>Grass
Butterfree
80 HP
Stage 2 Pokemon
Attack 1: Magic Dust 20
Attack 1 Energy Cost: 1 Grass, 1 Colorless
Attack 1 Special: Flip a coin. If heads, the Defending Pokemon is now either Asleep, Confused, Paralyzed, or Poisoned (your choice).
Attack 2: Hyper Reverse
Attack 2 Energy Cost: 2 Grass, 1 Colorless
Attack 2 Special: Does 10 damage times the number of Energy attached to the Defending Pokemon. After doing damage, remove a number of damage counters from Butterfree equal to the amount of damage done to the Defending Pokemon (after applying Weakness and Resistance).
Weakness: Fire
Resistance: Fighting
Retreat Cost: 0
Recommendation: Use Magic Dust the turn you evolve it and go for either Sleep or Paralysis to hold the Defending Pokemon in place. If it is a fully evolved Pokemon, then you will have the advantage using Hyper Reverse, and you will stay in the game for a long time because of the damage removal. The Retreat Cost helps you save it for a special occasion.
