Ballistic PlatesComposiflex manufactures a broad range of breast plates and back plates. These perform as stand-alone units or to upgrade NIJ Level IIIA and lower-rated vests to Level III and Level IV. Essentially the breast and back plates provide protection from high-powered rifles. Since breast plates are carried by a person often in dangerous circumstances, they must be light and compact. Composiflex's plates are constructed from lightweight armor materials such as Spectra Shield, Kevlar and Twaron usually in combination with a ceramic facing such as monolithic ceramic, 2" by 2" alumina tiles or silicone carbide tiles. Spectra Shield, however, can defeat NIJ Level III by itself at an areal density of just 4.75 pounds per square foot. A standard 10" by 12" Spectra Shield plate weighs only an astonishing 4.2 pounds...the lightest NIJ Level III breast plate in the world. Composiflex ballistic plates are used by several vest manufacturers in the U.S. and foreign countries. Composiflex offers a choice of several durable finishes, including nylon cloth, ABS, or glass/epoxy.
Ballistic ShieldsBallistic shields are widely used by police swat teams, the FBI, the DEA and other government agencies. By their sheer size, shields provide much more protection than a breast plate. Composiflex uses state-of-the-art ballistic materials in its shields. For example, a 19" by 34" Level IIIA shield weighs just 13 pounds. Composiflex manufactures a full line of shields, both flat and curved, to meet the most demanding requirements. Composiflex shields are finished with extremely durable materials to provide long, trouble-free service.
Vehicle ArmorVehicles present a very challenging armor problem. One often must
compromise on performance, weight and cost. Clearly all these considerations
are strongly interrelated. The best performing armor system tends to be
the most expensive. In aircraft and helicopters, minimum weight is crucial
to maintain optimum maneuverability of the craft. In ground vehicles, excess
weight often requires costly modifications to assure adequate handling,
braking, etc.... Composiflex's knowledge and experience of a vast array
of armor systems enables us to offer vehicle armorers the best affordable
compromise possible.
In many cases APC-Composiflex's customers purchase panels of composite armor
materials such as Spectra Shield or Kevlar which they cut, form and fit
themselves. APC-Composiflex provides a full line of composite armor panels
for defeating up to and including NIJ Level IV. Although Composiflex can
provide almost any size panel, our standard, no-waste Spectra Shield panel
is 48" by 54".
To defeat rounds with a steel or ceramic penetrator such as the AK-47, 5.56
mm M855 or 7.62 AP, it is necessary to provide a hard-faced armor such as
ceramic, S2-glass or ballistic steel backed by a composite armor material.
These systems are far more difficult to cut and are usually provided in
kit form. That is, the armorer supplies drawings or templates of the required
shapes to Composiflex. We then supply a kit of finished armor ready for
installation.
Because of the irregular contours in most vehicles, the ability to provide
complex shapes is paramount. Composiflex has the experience and equipment
to fabricate intricate parts efficiently. Composiflex manufactured the armor
for eleven C130-U Gunships. For this program Composiflex used drawings supplied
by its customer to manufacture a variety of complex components. In all,
thousands of parts having 177 different shapes were fabricated using silicone
carbide ceramic and Spectra Shield. Besides complex shapes these components
required close tolerances and sophisticated finishing techniques. They were
all spalled, edge-capped with glass epoxy, painted and labeled per military
specification. APC-Composiflex takes great pride in not only providing armor
having proven performance and high value, but having an aesthetically pleasing
appearance as well.
Structural ArmorStructural armor in the form of opaque armor or transparent armor
has many applications around the world, including banks, courtrooms, airports,
correctional institutions, casino money rooms, corporate offices, and embassies.
Materials of construction include Spectra Shield, Kevlar, Twaron, ceramic,
ballistic steel, ballistic glass, and polycarbonate. Structural armor can
be supplied to defeat any threat, from small handguns to high-powered, armor-piercing
projectiles.
Structural armor is available in sheet form or cut to your specific design
requirements. The APC- Composiflex engineering staff will assist you in
the optimum design of your specific armor system.
Portable ArmorIn many cases it is desirable to move or exchange armor systems rapidly,
such as temporary walls, automobile doors, tailgates and portable shelters.
In such situations the armor must be extremely light to not interfere with
the function of other components and to blend in with its surroundings.
Composiflex manufactures several armor systems to meet these requirements.
For example, there is a portable armor system that can be attached to the
door of a police vehicle in minutes without any special tools. This system
is particularly beneficial to law enforcement agencies because the armor
can be removed from an incoming vehicle and installed in an outgoing vehicle
without loss of valuable time. The law enforcement agency saves budget dollars
by minimizing the number of systems required while protecting all of its
on-duty officers.
APC-Composiflex also offers a line of bomb and fragment blankets. These
are stitched at regular intervals in a diamond shape to provide maximum
flexibility and protected from the environment with a durable nylon cover.
