James Coll A BRIEF FAMILY HISTORY transcribed by tc 1-27-99: "Earlier I mentioned the name Neidi Mor or Big Neggy Gallagher. This man figures in local history by the fact that he was one of the leaders in the fight at Lurg á Mhullaigh when those who objected to the payment of tithes attacked a company of yeomen that under the Command of Stewart, the landlord of Horn Head was protecting the tithe collector Moore. Lurg á Mhullaigh is in the townland of Kill near the Portnablagh - Dunfanaghy road. The yeomen had come to the top of a hillock to survey the surrounding when suddenly they were confronted by a number of men springing from cover. The element of surprise was with the attackers and the yeomen were not given time to load their muskets. Their opponents were armed only with sticks. Neddy disarmed Stewart, the captain, and broke his gun. Moore the tithe collector was captured and taken away by the countrymen. It is a tribute to the chivalry of these men that they did not molest their captive in any way but conveyed him beyond the confines of the parish and through Barnes Gap with orders never to return.
Later, Neddy along with others of the leaders was arrested. They were compelled to walk to Lifford jail, a distance of some forty miles, on a frosty night, shackled together. They were given jail sentences, Neddy's sentence being five years. His wife walked all the way to visit him while in prison. However, due to some amnesty given by the authorities the prisoners were released after serving six months."
When Steward of Horn Head decided to divide part of his estate into small holdings, Neddy who at that time was living in Casey, applied. The landlord must surely have been surprised when he saw satnding at this hall door the man who attacked and disarmed him at Lurg á Mhulluaigh. Yet, he did not take long to make up his mind. Perhaps he was impressed by Neddy's courage in approaching him and by his stalwart physique. It is said that his reply was "yes, it is men like you I want to break in the mountains." So Neddy got the farm.
He built a small house which he extended later. His first years crop was small but bit by bit and with the help of his growing sons he succeeded in carving out a hillside farm. He had several sons but at the moment I can recall the names of only two, Edward and Donal. I think the others included a Jamie. I know of two of his daughters, Anne who married Timmy Durning of Horn Head and Ellen as seen earlier married Jamie Coll of Breaghy. The name of Neddy's wife was Sophia (Sadhbhe). Her maiden name was also Gallegher.
