James Coll A BRIEF FAMILY HISTORY transcribed by tc
1-27-99: "Andrew married Aine Nic á Bhaird (annie MacAward). They
had four children, Charlie, Nan, Jamie, and John (twins). Andrew was born
in Knocnafaugher but his father purchased the tenancy of a farm for him
on another part of the Stewart of Ards estate, in Derryart. This would
be in the late 1830's or early 1840's. He died at the age of forty-two
as the result of a hurt caused by lifting a heavy stone for fence building.
His wife died shortly afterwards leaving the four
children orphans. One day a man arrived and attached a notice to the
door. The man was the estate bailiff and the notice was a notice to quit.
A day or two later the emergency men came, turned the family out and
carried out the furniture, leaving the children homeless. Crochuir (Corneilius)
MacAward, their uncle (brother of their mother) took them to his home at
the upper end of Knocnafaugher to the landlord and was given some compensation.
The twins Jamie and John were only nine years old at the time. The eldest
of the family, Charlie when about sixteen went to Australia on a free emigration
scheme as also did his
sister Nan. Little was heard of them again but it was said that Nan
married a sheep farmer, an Irishman, named McDermott."
