Sun. Eve. Nov 21-1926 [letter by Susie (Gray) MacGregor to her Sister & Niece]
Dearest Bird & Dorothy [Bertha & Dorothy Eckert],
I've been writing as usually I do on Sun. Eve. but this time it has been for the flowers for mother [Elizabeth (Groom)(Turner) GRAY] who died four days before on Nov 17, 1926] and I want to tell you how kind & good everyone has been. I expect I shall ramble a good bit in this but you will understand.
Mother went at about 11:45 Wed. night - and she was so glad to go that I cannot grieve as I otherwise would. Just Robert [Alan MacGregor, her son, 14 yrs. old] and I were with here as she wished it that way - altho[ugh] Dr Axtell had only left a few minutes before. She wanted me to hold her hand & I held it tight till the very last. Her mind was so clear & she spoke so distinctly that it did not seem possible that she was going, yet I knew by her breathing that she was. I think the last conscious thing that she said was "Suffer me to come to Thee." You remember the little prayer she taught us all? Earlier in the evening she had asked me & we had prayed The Lords Prayer together and said the 23d Psalm.
I sent for Mr Byham the undertaker we had had for Sue.[perhaps a daughter who had died young] & he was so nice about everything. And mother looked so like herself. I combed her hair & she had asked to have that black satin dress put on. I just laid a few pansies in her hand - just as I have seen her sit & hold a few flowers so many times - Just loosely. I got a big spray of lavendar & white chrys- for we girls - with 'Mother' on it & Robert selected some white & yellow ones for the Grandchildren. Joe [MacGregor - her husband] & Robert [her son] sent a basket of beautiful white ones. Then there were flowers from her S[unday] S[chool] class & our Aid Soc[iety] & Mr & Mrs Jones & Sadie [?].
Harold [Mathews? - her step sister Amy's son] drove all the way from Pgh. [Pittsburgh] Thurs. night & sent a beautiful wreath of roses & those lov[e]ly dark leaves. I had 'our Mr Miller [minister] come over from Reynoldsville [a nearby town] (Mrs M[iller] came with him) for a short service Fri. evening. I asked him to read from the 31 Chap. of Proverbs beginning at the 25th verse to the end of the Chap. because ever since I first read those verses when I was a little girl I thought they were written especially of our mother. He spoke beautifully and made just a short prayer. There was none of the fuss there so often is. All of the dear old souls in the S.S. class were here & Robert had Mr Jones take them all home.
Sat. morn Mr Byham came down for us & we drove to Meadville. Cecil [Gaston - 28 years old] was on the train & Joe [MacGregor] went with us & when we got to Niles [OH] Sadie joined us. Mr Sharer & Mr Hicks - a Baptist Minister met us at 55th St. [Cleveland] & we went out to Lake View [Cemetery] and Kay [Eckert] & Fred [Eckert] & Nettie [Jeanette - his wife] & George Day & Alice & Carrie Lee & Herbert & Granville [Lane] & Betty [Gaston Lane] were there.
I had arranged to have the casket left open & they all saw her and they all said how like herself & dear she looked. There were more flowers there and especially from Mrs Weed - hers had a card that said she was ill in bed & could not come. So write to her Bird [Bertha Eckert].
I had had a notice put in the Cleve. Plain Dealer both Fri. & Sat. [Nov. 19 & 20, 1926]. Nettie [Jeanette Eckert] said Anne Bayliss called her up to know if it was mother as she was not sure of my name. I had sent word to Carrie - Mrs Weed & Dr [unclear] as well as our own folks.
It was a snowy day but not cold. Kay [Eckert] went back to Oberlin on the bus & Joe [MacGregor] & Sadie left on train 6.' for Mead[ville] & Niles. Robert & I went down to the S[t]ation with Betty & G.B. [Granville Lane] & Cecil [Gaston] who had to go on to Detroit but we waited an hour or so in the Station Lobby & then Robert & I went over to the Erie depot & went to Niles to stay all night with Sadie as we could not make connections for home. We had dinner with her today before we came home. We got here abt. 3:30 -4:.
She was glad to have us.
Bird, one of the things that bothers me is about mothers clothes. What shall I do with those two new dresses of hers? She never had either one on. You gave both of them to her so I wish you'd tell me what to do about them.
I don't know how long it will take me to get the money matters settled up but when I do shall I send you a check? I haven't a very good idea yet how much there will be as there are a number of little things I promised her I would do.
Now Bird dear don't fret or worry or regret but do as mother wanted you to & get a little peace & comfort. Heaps of love to you both - not forgetting Paul [Eckert - who died the year before] & Wudger [?].
