GEORGE JUNE. Death of a Well-Known Resident of Sandusky County.
George June, an old and highly respected resident of Fremont, died at his residence in Rice township, Thursday morning, April 23, at 2 a. m., aged 75 years, 3 months and 27 days. The funeral sevices will be held at the Methodist church, Saturday, April 25, at 1:30 o'clock. Interment in Oakwood.
George June, retired farmer and horse buyer, was a man with whom every Fremonter was familiar. He was born in Dryden, Tompkins county N. Y., December 26, 1821. In 1833 he came to Sandusky city with his parents. At the age of 15 he left home to work on his own account, going with his brother Daniel to serve as teamster in the construction of mason work in Lucas county, and helped build the first poor house in that county. In 1838 he went south and for about eleven years drove stage for the Ohio Stage Co. on the national road. After this he went to Cincinnati and engaged first as a common hand to assist a stock company in shipping live stock down the Mississippi river; but his natural tact and his long experience in handling horses soon caused him to be put in charge of large consignments of horses on vessels as foreman. For about ten years he went south in the fall and returned in the spring. Having accumulated some mony, he invested it in a nice farm, west of Fremont, whereon he settled. This he afterwards sold and for several years resided in town. Not long ago he purchased a farm in Rice township, where he died.
During the civil war Mr. June furnished cavalry horses for the Ohio troops at the rate of 2000 a year. He shipped the first car load of horses, shipped from Fremont to Boston. By his long and active out-door work and temperate habits, Mr. June retained robust health until quite recently.
