SALES A. JUNE - Death of a Well Known Fremont Citizen
Sales A. June, one of Fremont's oldest citizens, died quite suddenly Sunday morning at ten minutes past eleven at his boarding place, the Hotel Croghan.
Mr. June was taken suddenly ill Saturday afternoon with heart failure and although every effort was made to relieve his suffering, remedies seemed to have no effect and he died at the hour above mentioned. The deceased reached his 67th birthday seven days ago. The remains were removed to the home of his brother David June Sunday evening and the funeral servicies will be held from there Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. W. G. Waters will officiate. Interment at Oakwood.
Sayles A. June was born in Tompkins county, N. Y., August 2, 1829, and came to Sandusky city in 1833. In 1849 he went to Cleveland and learned the machinist's trade, working the lake boats as engineer in summer and the shops in winter.
In 1856 Mr. June went to Brantford, Canada, where he went into the saw milling business furnishing large quantities of lumber for Canadian railways. He also constructed a number of plank roads. In 1862 he went to Buffalo and assisted in the building of the United States steamer "Commodore Perry," afterwards serving as engineer of the boat under government employ. After this he superintended the building of a propeller for the Fremont Steam Navigation Co., and ran her on the lake until about 1867 when he started a boiler works in Fremont. These works he continued about eight years when he sold out to D. June & Co., and remained in their employ and as a partner until 1890. In 1891 he was appointed by the United States Lighthouse board to go [to] Cleveland and superintend the building of engines and boilers of two lighthouse boats, the "Columbia" and the "Lilac."
Mr. June was the father of three children two of whom are now living Adelaide, wife of Wm. Waugh, of Montreal, and Peter June, of this city. He was a member of Brainard Lodge, F. and A. M. He also leaves three brothers. [transcribed from photocopy 08 Mar 03 tcd]REFR: obt cen
