 From: Mark Gardner Petit Family Story Beginning 1713

   Joseph Petit was born Halloville France about 1713. He died January 30,1767
at the age of 54, in Halloville. One of the children of Joseph and his wife Marie
was Nicholas.
  Nicholas Petit Was born in village of Barber France. He died July 14, 1787
at the age of 33. His son Joseph Petit was born in village of Barber on June 1,
1782 resided in village of Chazelle, Camtom De Blamant, Dept. of Nancy, France.
Died November 25, 1859, buried Marshallville, Ohio. St Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
   He and his family left Chazelle, France February 26, 1832. They crossed
the Atlantic Ocean in a Packet ship in thirty days, landing in New York City.
   His children were: John Peter, John Baptisye, Joseph J., Magadalene,
Barbara, (died in France) Francis J., August Eugene (who became Brother Maximus).
   Joseph J. and John B. and father Joseph worked on railroad in what is now
the center of Manhattan. They left New York City on July 4, 1832 for Ohio. Taking
the steamboat on the Hudson River to Albany, then on New York And Albany
And Erie Canal to Buffalo, then by boat on Lake Erie to Cleveland. From
there on Ohio Canal to Canal Fulton.
   About August 1832, they purchased a farm near Marshallville. Nearest
Catholic Church at Canton, 24 miles away. Catholic Missionaries had said
Mass at home of George Whitman, Chippewa Township since 1826, where as devout Catholics, the Petite' walked, always attended, Francis and Joseph help to
clear the forest and built the first Log Cabin Catholic Church in Wayne County. First church of any denomination in Chippewa Township, erected 1836.
