Funny Face
Information
Funny Face was an artificially pre-sweetened drink mix product line
introduced by Pillsbury in the '60s. The original six flavors
were
Goofy Grape, Rootin' Tootin' Raspberry, Freckle Face Strawberry,
Loud Mouth Lime, Chinese Cherry, and Injun Orange. Through extensive
advertising and promotion, the drink mix popularity grew and new flavors
were added.
The drink mix popularity declined when the FDA announced the sweetener
used
in the mix (calcium cyclamate) caused cancer in laboratory rats. It
was
reintroduced using saccharine which again was denounced by the FDA.
It
was finally made available in both unsweetened and pre-sweetened forms.
The most popular premium offer was the funny face mug. These mugs
can still
be found at Brady
Enterprises Inc.; the current owner of the Funny Face
Product line.
