Convergences
and Divergences... If all the world is a stage then the
social world of the enterprise is a theatre that particularly interests me. Why
does the idea that stakesholders share their humanityone way or the other
in every enterpriseseem so radical? Whether one believes that today the
human cogs are to be driven to higher levels of productivity and quality, or
are to have their creative powers unleashed, or are to become further implicated
within 'holistic' organizations, eventually a deep consideration must regard
each and every person's humanity wholistically. More to the point: it must regard
their humanity-in-progress, in other words take into account the most sublime
prospect, that their 'work' may be in fact their calling. This movement toward
a deepening regard and greater discrimination is revolutionary, and is happening
right now in companies acknowledging...the path is a goal. The pendulum, having
swung toward an irrevocable ending point, (the enterprise as only about output)
is today beginning to move in another direction.
We now know that an enterprise is not really a: machine, or combat battalion, or a free-market experiment, or something done to 'the many' by the 'few'. What is the operatant model? What does it include and preclude? What are its assumptions? Are they tested or testable? What is its human dimension? Does it even have a human dimension? Does the organization have a soul or have soul? Is eros a positive factor, a hidden factor, or the factor tacit but damped down where it has a mysterious life of its own?
