HISTORY
HATTERAS ISLAND HISTORY Though the seven villages of Hatteras Island share much in common background, there are some differences. This is difficult to imagine today, as Highway 12 provides a much-traveled thread of continuity. However, when one considers their isolation and the effort required to travel across the dunes or along the surf line in the days before the beach road, it is easier to comprehend that each community developed its own first families, churches, interests, and --in some cases-- brogue. http://www.hatteras-nc.com/history/
