Windsurfing at Cape Hatteras is an experience that every windsurfer, beginer or expert should check out. Hatteras has some of the most consistent and strongest wind east of the Mississippi. As well as some of the best wave sailing too. Not to mention the fun of meeting lots of other windsurfers there for vacation too. Best time to go to Cape HatterusThe best time to windsurf at Hatterus is usually late March to mid May for the spring season and October to late November for the fall season. This is when it's the windiest and most consistent. Sometimes in the middle of the summer there's a chance for thermal winds, depending on the conditions (abnormally cold water and very hot inland temperatures). If you plan on going there in early spring or late fall you'll need a couple of wet suits for the tempurature of the water (40 - 60 degrees)and wind chill (55 - 30 degrees).Best Launch SitesThe sailing on Hatteras, which is actually part of a barrier island chain known as the Outer Banks of North Carolina, pretty much starts in Nags Head. The best spots to try are Jockey's Ridge State Park (milepost 13 on the bypass) and the new Kitty Hawk Sports store/site (milepost 16).On Hatteras Island, your options only improve. Top ocean spots include Ramp 23, south of Salvo (four-wheel-drive required);Ramp 34, north of Avon; Ego Beach; and the legendary Hatteras Lighthouse. Pamlico Sound sailing includes the former Emily's restaurant in Rodanthe; Windsurfing Hatteras shop site in Avon; Canadian Hole, between Avon and Buxton; and Frisco Woods Campground, Frisco.
