Information About the ULTRA Mailing List

The purpose of the ULTRA list is to discuss the sport of ultrarunning. This loose term covers races not only of distances longer than a marathon (26.2 miles), but also shorter races which can be deemed difficult or extreme. (Races of this type would include the Escarpment Trail Run, Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon, and Mount Washington.)

If you'd like to subscribe to the ULTRA list, send email to the listserv address

listserv@listserv.dartmouth.edu.

In the body of the message, put the line:

subscribe ultra Your Name
e.g.subscribe ultra Gary Cantrell

Shortly thereafter you'll receive this Welcome message by e-mail.

You can also subscribe to the list through the web interface.

Unfortunately, due to problems with people coming in from accounts with fake names on Yahoo, Hotmail, Juno and other free mailer services and disrupting
the list, we decided some time ago to no longer allow new subscriptions from those services unless we can verify the person's real identity.

Once you have subscribed you can search and read messages from the list archives.

History

In December of 1993, Joe Jurczyk and Joel Zucker discussed the possibility of starting a mailing list dedicated to ultras. When an initial inquiry resulted in an overwhelming response from people on DRS (the Dead Runners Society mailing list) and the rec.running newsgroup the decision was made to go ahead and start the list.

Because of the strictness of the guidelines on the list, another list dedicated to the sport, the IUS-L list (Internet Ultra Society) was started by Dave Combs in 1995.

At the beginning of 1999, the two lists merged, forming one list which goes under the name of ULTRA. The list has over 1,250 subscribers from 30 countries, as of September, 2001. The current listowners are Dave Combs and Joe Jurczyk.

Joel Zucker, one of the original ULTRA listowners and founders, passed away on his way home after completing the 1998 Hardrock 100 . His contributions to the sport, his motivational stories and his advice to others will always be remembered.
