PRINTMAKING METHOD

Background

The collagraph, print made from collage, is my primary medium of expression. I frequently combine collagraphs and etchings. Several plates printed over each other resolve each piece with my characteristic 3-D effect. Color, texture, shape and the strong surprise element inherent in printmaking — This combination gels in my unique abstract style.

I handpull all of my prints. I feel this is essential for truly original prints, simultaneously enhancing artistic growth and communication.

Collage materials are often given to me by those interested in my work. This recycling and connecting with people reflects much of what my work is about.

Technical Notes

My prints are done with oil-based printmaking inks thinned with burnt plate oil. I use an etching press to transfer the design from plate to paper. I print on 100% rag paper, usually Rives BFK white because of its strength, acid free quality and brilliance.

Each collagraph and collagraph/etching usually requires at least three plates printed over one another to complete the work. Frequently, more are needed.

I print in editions. When the entire edition is complete, I indicate the number and title of each print in pencil. Then I add my signature.

The cost of a thing is the amount of what I call life which is required to be exchanged for it, immediately or in the long run.

– Henry David Thoreau
