The last one that I planted was a few years ago, it was only 3' X 5' and
only had about 5 trees on it, this one is definitely bigger and better
(grunt!). The rains this spring uncovered a few very big, flat rocks in the
creek behind our house, as the weeks progressed I realized that a few had to
be harvested for some slab plantings in my yard...walking the creek I found
a few more...bigger ones!!!
In this set we plant it up, very HOT afternoon...but I've waited all summer
for this...I can keep them alive...I think?? To secure the plants to the
rock we've used 'split-shot' and copper wire 'tails' then wired the trees
down with the standard aluminum wire. The shot was driven in with a hammer and
punch after drilling the holes just a bit oversized with a masonary
bit...secure fastening manner.
Right now two of the trees are showing a new flush of buds, the others are
still alive and holding fast. Albertas are easy to grow but a bitch to
style, won't take wire worth a damn. The only thing that I can do is prune
'em to shape...it will be two to three years 'till they begin to look like
something...anything like a forrest...must add 2 more trees in back, 7
total...nice forrest in the end.
Hey Tim, nice day mate, even though it was hot as Hell your case of beer
helped all go well! Tim Ryan was the help to plant the slab...nice job and all.
