Women of the World
The portraits in this series are meant to present women of various cultures and ethnicities. We hope to create a space where women will lead the way in celebrating differences while sharing their uniqueness with one another.
The first painting is from a line drawing made by Degas. I used his design to make my own drawing which I then used in a color study. The title is "Despair" and it is soft pastel on 18" x 20" colored paper.
The second painting is affectionately known to me as "The Russian". It was inspired by a photograph of a Muslim Russian mother holding her child. The portrait is meant to convey the woman's spirit rather than her features. If you will notice, the woman is apparently emerging from what appears to be a very bright light... possibly danger. The woman, however, appears to be serene, courageous and she is holding her child very safely regardless of impending danger.
The Russian is made from soft pastels on 120# Canson stock. 33"X 20", unframed.
The third painting in the Woman of the World series is my interpretation of what the woman who appeared in a very famous photograph might have looked like between her childhood and the present day. The painting is of an Afghan refugee woman. When the painting is scanned I will put it up at the sight.
The fourth painting is in progress and it is a portrait of an American woman from Cape Cod. She is quite a beautiful woman and is willing to be my representative of Western women.
