St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622) was trained in the legal profession.  Against his father's wishes, Francis was ordained a priest in 1593.  He zealously ministered to the poor and attracted many to the Catholic Church through his simple, yet fervent, preaching style.  Francis worked diligently to bring back Calvinists to the Catholic faith although this undertaking often placed his life in jeopardy.  Through his hard work and tireless preaching, conversions into Catholicism abounded.  In 1600 Pope Clement VIII, named him Bishop of Geneva, Switzerland.  As bishop, Francis de Sales focused his efforts in preaching and teaching the faith.  He and Jane Frances de Chantal founded the Order of the Visitation in 1610.  His most famous book is "Introduction to the Devout Life", acclaimed as a spiritual masterpiece.   In 1665, forty-three years after his death, Francis was canonized.  In 1877 Pope Pius IX declared Francis de Sales a "Doctor of the Church" and Pope Pius XI named him the patron saint of journalists and writers.
