Broadcast News (1987)

Broadcast News

Jane (Holly Hunter) thought she understood the world of news reporting. She believed that it is a world where people maintain their ethics, and intelligence means more than good looks. Then Tom came along...

William Hurt stars as Tom, a handsome (yet not too bright) sports reporter who stumbles into an anchorman position at Jane's station. To make Tom appear to be a capable reporter, Jane and her team must coach him through each broadcast.

Even though he represents everything she has fought against in her career, Jane finds herself attracted to Tom. This surprises no one more than Aaron (Albert Brooks), who is secretly in love with Jane. He begins to see Tom as a rival both in and out of the office. Aaron is the station's most talented (yet unappreciated) reporter. When Tom begins receiving undeserved recognition from the network heads, Aaron proves that all is fair in love and war.

I was not incredibly impressed with "Broadcast News". With such a great cast, I think I was expecting more. There are some funny scenes, like Joan Cusack racing through the hallways with a freshly-edited news tape in her hand, trying to beat a deadline only seconds away. But the majority of the film is slow-moving and dull. I was disappointed in the ending. There was a definite way that I thought it would go, but it didn't.

The highlight of "Broadcast News" has to be Albert Brooks. He is great no matter what he's in. It amazed me that he could have such funny lines when no one else was as fortunate. Perhaps he ad-libbed alot.

While it's not bad enough to be dog poop, I don't see myself watching this movie again for awhile. Maybe in a few years, if my parents have an Albert Brooks marathon...
