A Christmas Story (1983)

A Christmas Story

"Oh Fu.....dge" Ralphie Parker

Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) doesn't ask for much. He gets along with his little brother (most of the time) and he doesn't complain when his mom makes red cabbage (again). But one thing would make Ralphie the happiest kid on Earth. Ralphie's greatest Christmas wish is an official Red Ryder BB gun. But, unfortunately, Santa's elves aren't being very cooperative.

Every grown-up in Ralphie's life voices their opinion on the BB gun issue, and no one is in its favor. The phrase, "You'll shoot your eye out", resonates through Ralphie's life at every turn, and Christmas is quickly approaching. Ralphie realizes that his last hope is to discuss matters with the big guy, Santa! Will Santa see things his way, or will Ralphie have a blue Christmas after all?

I can bet that most people reading this review have already seen "A Christmas Story". If you have, then you know what an extraordinary film it is. If you haven't seen it at least once, where have you been? It's a holiday tradition nowadays (why, the cable channel TNT ran it for 24 hours straight on Christmas Day 1997 and 1998!).

The character of Ralphie represents the average person trying to achieve an incredible goal. He is the underdog that people love to cheer for. Perhaps it's just because he's a cute little boy. Or perhaps it's because we all see a bit of ourselves inside him.

Not only is this a great holiday movie, it contains elements that make it a wonderful family film no matter what time of year. The film is set in the 40's, and brings back the nostalgia of radio programs and family dinners. It can also make an adult recall various parts of their childhood, like finally standing up to the school bully, or spending time with the best friends they've ever had.

So, if you haven't seen "A Christmas Story" yet, go out and rent it. But, if you wait until December, lots of luck finding it. Everyone seeks it out when they're in the holiday mood. I'd try a little earlier, like July...
