Electric Dreams (1984)

Electric Dreams

This is not the usual "boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl" story. No, this is a "boy meets girl, boy's COMPUTER meets girl, boy and computer each fall in love with girl" story.

Lenny von Dohlen ("Home Alone 3") stars as Miles, an introverted architect who can see no place in his life for technology. However, after some persuasion from a co-worker, he purchases a computer to help manage his time more efficiently.

After his new hardware sustains some accidental damage (being dropped, shorted-out, and doused with cheap champagne), Miles soon realizes he has a new roommate. His computer has mysteriously come to life, filled with questions about what it's like to be human.

All goes well until the computer (voice of Bud Cort) begins to fall in love with Miles' beautiful neighbor, Madeline (Virginia Madsen). A rivalry between man and machine ensues, with each one trying to win Madeline's affection.

"Electric Dreams" is a sweet comedy that was truly made ahead of its time. Released in 1984, home computers were just becoming introduced into our lives. Still, the movie was able to foretell the unique relationship we'd all come to know with these machines.

Wonderful acting and a lively soundtrack only heighten the magic in this very unique love-triangle. Although the main character is basically an appliance, his heartfelt emotions are believable. You hope he wins the girl, no matter how ridiculous that may seem! Even though this scenario will never (hopefully) occur in real life, it's extremely charming to watch on film.
