The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

The Return of the Living Dead

"More brains!" Tarman

On his first day of work at Uneeda Medical Supply, Freddy (Thom Mathews) learns the truth about the 1968 movie, "Night of the Living Dead". Co-worker Frank (James Karen) tells Freddy that the movie was based on actual events having to do with a chemical spill in a government hospital. The spill had caused some dead bodies to become re-animated, but the U.S. Army covered the entire occurrence up for security reasons. Frank goes on to say that some of the bodies are hidden in Uneeda's basement, having been incorrectly shipped there years before.

Not being able to leave well enough alone, the two men venture into the basement to sneak a peek. After disturbing one of the corpses' containers, Frank and Freddy accidently let the "undeadly" chemicals escape. What they do next sets off a chain reaction which threatens innocent lives and allows the dead, once again, to walk the earth.

While it's definitely not for the squeamish, "The Return of the Living Dead" is absolutely one of the most entertaining zombie movies around. Humor is mixed in with the horror, and the characters are very sympathetic (the undead excluded). I was especially amazed by the special effects. Split dogs, walking headless corpses, and brains, oh my! You can't help but wonder while watching, "How did they do that?".

If you scare easily, do not watch "The Return of the Living Dead" in the dark. There are some very creepy scenes, and it's better to avoid the nightmares if you can.
