Andie (Molly Ringwald) is a girl who lives on "the wrong side of the tracks". She endures daily persecution from the "richies" at her high school because she doesn't have much money. Determined to escape into a better life, Andie focuses on her education instead of her social life.
Duckie (Jon Cryer) is Andie's lifelong friend, and the class loser. He's been beaten up more times than he's attended class, and has no intention of ever growing up. He also happens to be in love with Andie.
The friendship between Andie and Duckie becomes strained when Andie begins dating Blane (Andrew McCarthy). While Andie believes that the relationship could work, Duckie thinks otherwise. Heartbroken himself, he tells Andie that a rich kid like Blane would only end up hurting her. When Blane's friends convince him that dating a poor girl is not a good idea, it appears that Duckie's warnings are coming true.
This movie deals with many of the emotions that a teenager must deal with before reaching adulthood. Love, hate, frustration, jealousy, peer pressure...woof !!
I'm glad I'm a dog!
Andie is the central character for many relationships in "Pretty in Pink". Not only is she the love of Duckie's life, but Blane's as well. Neither one sees her as a poor girl, simply as an independent woman who is going to make something of herself. She is also the rock for her father (Harry Dean Stanton). Ever since his wife deserted their family years before, the only thing that's kept him going is his daughter. Andie helps him to see that it's not right to keep living in the past. In her own way, Andie helps all three men in her life to mature.
"Pretty in Pink" is another instant classic. Like The Breakfast Club, it's a movie that will surely be enjoyed for generations to come.
