Prom Night (1980)

Prom Night

Kim's (Jamie Lee Curtis) younger sister, Robin, was accidently killed while playing a twisted game of hide-and-seek with some friends. The four children who caused the accident swear never to tell anyone what really happened that day in the abandoned schoolhouse.

Now, six years later, someone is seeking revenge for Robin's death. The four friends who managed to bury their terrible secret begin receiving strange phone calls and threatening notes. One by one, those responsible for Robin's demise pay the ultimate price.

"Prom Night" is one of your typical "slasher" movies of the 1980's. Sex equals death, drugs equal death, or just simply being a jackass can buy you a ticket to meet your maker. It's also one of those films where the authorities believe an escaped mental patient is on his way back to town to finish the killing spree he started years ago. Is their theory correct in "Prom Night"? Sorry, I will never tell...

Jamie Lee Curtis, as always, does a great job in the lead role. While she is not exactly one of the characters being stalked throughout the entire film, she is chased at the end, and it is well worth the wait.

I have seen two versions of this movie: the theatrical version and the Special Edition. Don't be enticed into renting the Special Edition if you see both versions at the video store. While viewing extra footage not used in the first edition of a movie is usually cool, "Prom Night" 's extra scenes consist of unnecessarily long killer/victim chases, and what feels like six minutes of disco dancing between Jamie Lee Curtis and her Prom date. Don't get me wrong, Ms. Curtis can dance, but if I want to see disco, I'll rent "Saturday Night Fever". In my book, horror and retro-dancing do not mix.
