'Take the field'
It's the phrase all bands wait for. It's the judge's way of saying it's your turn to perform. You're anxious, nervous, almost sick with excitement and just plain scared. But you do your best. You try to remember everything you've learned and practiced over the last several months.
Sometimes it's raining, and the field is so muddy you lose your shoes. You have to pretend you don't notice. Sometimes it's snowing, and you're so cold it's hard to hold onto your instrument or mallets or twirl your flag or baton. You can see your breath, but it doesn't matter, you just keep marching and playing.
It's all a part of the game the competition, and when it's over, you laugh and cheer and cry.
It's a commitment you make with lots and lots of pride. Pride in yourself , your band and your achievement.
And THAT is what it's all about.
