There's a new review of SOB's "Haywire" remixes up at CoolCleveland. here's the money shot:
Fellow scenesters Andy Kubiszewski (Stabbing Westward, Prick, the The) and Mike Crooker (Tofu, Indian Rope Burn) join SOB's own Christopher Foldi among those credited with the remixes. All of the takes are engaging and interesting; they're also all very different.
There's a flavor for everyone on Haywire Remixes 1:2 and Haywire Remixes 2:2. Pay particular note of Crooker's "Take Me Away: To Bollywood," which intersperses Indian rhythms/drumming with a Depeche Mode-styled throbbing; Foldi's edgy "Losing It: VCR Mix," which has a decidedly Nitzer Ebb feel to it; and Kubiszewski's downtempo take on "Levity," which takes the song into a Kruder & Dorfmeister left turn.
The tofu remix of "Take Me Away (to bollywood)" appears on State of Being's limited edition CD-EP entitled, "Haywire Remixes 2:2." The disc contains remixed versions of songs from the band's critically acclaimed CD, "Haywire."
There's also a review of the 2:2 disc up at the FreeTimes where I'm credited as "Tolu" -- heh. I'm not sure about the Bauhaus reference to my remix, but you can decide for yourself here.
Coming Soon UnSilent Film 6.
In earlier news...
USF 5 was Wednesday, October 26, 2005 @ Rain Nightclub -- another stellar show from the crew, and another full house! Big thanks to Michael Render for the DVD Projector and screen!
The last six UnSilent Film gigs have proven to be some of the most interesting shows I have ever played. Performing live (five times at Rain Nightclub, and a 100-year-old church as part of the Midnight Mixer series) to "Nosferatu," "Metropolis," "The Passion of Joan of Arc," "Santo vs. Frankenstein's Daughter" and "The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari" watching people all staring quietly at the screen while an 80+ year old movie is playing has been quite a trip. Not only the audience, but the people who are collaborating on the films are absolutely locked in. Many thanks to Steve, Shawn, Tim and Luigi-Bob for taking the idea and expanding on it.
UnSilent Film 4 "Santo vs. Frankenstein's Daughter" is in the books -- and a "i muy caliente !" time was had by all. Viva El Santo! Kudos to Matt and Patrick for fitting in seamlessly and for the crowd who had as much fun with the movie as we did on stage...
UnSilent Film 3: "The Passion of Joan of Arc" was a huge success -- the biggest crowd to date and some seriously intense music. The pictures are up on the site.
The "Rock The Runway" fashion show at the Rathskeller on the campus of Kent State University on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 was packed w/ over 300+ people digging the Tofu and Elliptical tracks. The new laptop came through like a champ -- thanks to Logan and his crew for making it a smooth ride. You read the write-up here. And some clarification -- the way the sentence is constructed in paragraph 16, it make it sound as if made the appetizers AND the music -- I did not -- although I could have. ;)
The Subliminal Self CD "Chapter and Verse" is out now, hit Patrick up for a copy before they're all gone! For a sneak peek check out "Chaos Of Emotion" (radio mix).
A film featuring some of my soundtrack work is out -- "Gloom" is a nifty DIY horror film -- available now on DVD from First Cut Studios.
A remix for Canadian poet Wayne Mercier is now out for "This Poem". It's sort of a homage to the style of Ken Nordine.
An original track for a compilation idea that never seemed to take off -- :30 or :60 pieces for TV shows that don't exist -- called "Imaginary Themes": Quinn Martin was the result.
shhh... I don't know who this is singing, but it's a cool track...
According to my referrer logs, SIMRONAN - AFRAIDOFSWORDS (tofu remix) is still getting many hits a day. HUGE thanks to batty_ for hosting it. Go here first, and it will all begin to make sense (or not). UPDATE: The sequel SIMRONAN - AFRAIDOFSCISSORS (tofu remix) is now up.
"Eyes, Sighs, Lies, Thighs" at 140 BPM sounds like an electro track circa 1979 (think Flying Lizards vs. The Normal).
Next are three remixes -- Lovespirals -- "Walk Away (jazz blues exploration mix)". The tempo goes from the original 108 to 135 which make the vocals um, "fluid" across the 6/8 beat. Think Sinatra type phrasing, which surprisingly works in this situation. Also, Karmacoda -- "All That Depth (hypnogogic mix)" -- it's all about the colors, man.
Vol. 4 of the "Not Necessarily Beatiful But Mutated" Devo comp is out, which contains the tofu version of "Gates Of Steel" with Christopher Foldi on vocals. Contact Rev. Toth Wilder for purchase details.
An old(er) piece finally made it to the web, called "Osaka At 48 Frames Per Second" (mp3) which can be found along with other remixes of the same piece.
As always, a great collection of artists and tracks over at the .microsound site -- RNDTXT is up and includes the track "Babble_On". The project was based on the how random text is embedded in spam messages to confuse Baysian filters. You can also read about how the track was put together.
Other projects include 7econds: based on the concept that "the average length of time needed today to comprehend new information is approx. seven seconds". My contribution is called "7even", Klanghausen (contains the track "Krell"); "City Of The Future" (based on a audio clip from Tarkovsky's version of "Solaris") has been released and contains the piece "divided highway" (mp3).
Also, the The Stone Cast and The Ripple Made, "John Watermann Memorial Project", bufferFuct Project, McDonna Project and Parasites Project.
There's also an interview I did (in 2002) for SynthCleveland archived on the site.
