Clinch Valley Community Action Community Corrections Program
In 1983, Tazewell
County was experiencing jail overcrowding. Alternative
sentencing programs became ever popular, so CVCA, in cooperation
with the court system began the Community Sentencing
Program. This program was designed for first-time, non
violent felons and misdemeanants who were sentenced to community
service in lieu of incarceration.
Then in 1995, the Virginia General Assembly passed the
Comprehensive Community Corrections Act that local governments
were eligible to receive community corrections funding.
Again, with a cooperative effort, CVCA worked with Tazewell County
to operate the Community Corrections Program. These
court-referred offenders would have received jail time and would
be on probation for a year. This program is required to
place the offender with a worksite, monitor their performance,
conduct random drug screens if ordered and report to the Court on
their progress or completion.
CVCA worked with 340 clients in
the Community Corrections Program and 386 clients in the Community
Sentencing Program over the last year and reported 33,198 hours
valued at $170,969.70.
