| TASK's mission is to assist families confronted with the complexities of raising and educating children with special needs. Special needs children are those with physical, mental, emotional or learning disabilities. Families need support, training and information to prepare them to take an active role in their child's development and improve educational outcomes. In addition, TASK provides parent training workshops, disability information to families and agencies and referrals to other services. For the last 17 years TASK, in cooperation with Tazewell County Public Schools, has provided a four-week summer enrichment program. This program is free and open to all Tazewell County special education students. In 1999, 70 special needs students, ages 13 to 17, benefited from a variety of educational and recreational programs, plus direct services to better than 275 families and other agencies. Staff last year participated in over 75 meetings and court hearings with families. |
